Hydraulic & Pneumatic Seal Identification
Strip a cylinder and you are left with a pile of unmarked seals: U-cups, wipers, buffer rings, piston assemblies, wear bands, and backup rings. Olypsys uses a guided 3-angle grid capture and 3D section fitting to measure ID × OD × Height and match across 30,184 hydraulic & pneumatic seal identities.

Calibrated Grid Lines + Inner & Outer Contour Points
Place the seal on an Olypsys grid and take one to three angled photos on your phone. The solver locks onto the unoccluded 10 mm grid lines (cyan) for sub-millimetre perspective calibration and traces the inner bore contour (orange) and outer lip/OD contour (green) to fit the 3D cross-section.
Solved 10 mm grid intersections (cyan) and inner/outer contour points (amber/green) lock camera angle and 3D wall height.
Annotated grid intersections and contour points separate the raised scraping lip from the outer heel.
Tracks the outer steel case and inner elastomer lip simultaneously while detecting multi-material construction.
Captures the deep U-channel mouth and heel geometry to distinguish loaded vs. symmetric U-cups.

Hydraulic & Pneumatic Seal Identification FAQs
Technical questions on 3-angle seal measurement, profile matching, resting orientation, and catalogue coverage.
How do you identify an unmarked hydraulic cylinder seal?
Combine three pieces of information: (1) where the part sat in the cylinder (wiper, rod seal, buffer seal, piston seal, guide band, or static seal), (2) its three reference dimensions (inner diameter ID, outer diameter OD, and axial height H), and (3) its cross-section profile (such as a U-cup, O-ring energised U-cup, PTFE glide ring, 5-part compact piston seal, guide ring, or wiper). Olypsys automates this on a calibration grid using a 3-angle photo capture, 3D section fitting, and a 30,184-part catalogue.
Why is a single overhead photo not enough for 3D cylinder seals?
Unlike a flat washer, cylinder seals such as U-cups, wipers, piston assemblies, and guide bands stand 4 mm to 20 mm tall. In a single overhead photo, elevated top edges shift outward by h·tan(θ), introducing millimetres of perspective error, and axial height cannot be separated from diameter. By capturing an overhead frame plus two oblique angles (~22° and ~45°), Olypsys fits candidate 2D sections in 3D (r, z) space and solves for ID, OD, and height together.
Does the user need to know technical seal names like "twin-lip rod seal" or "AN wiper"?
No. Before taking a photo, you can tap where the part came from on an interactive hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder cutaway, or tap "I don’t know". After capture, Olypsys ranks colour-coded cross-section drawings by material (polyurethane, NBR rubber, fabric composite, PTFE, POM, steel case, garter spring) and labels them as Best fit, Close alternative, or Possible.
What happens if an asymmetric seal is photographed upside down?
Olypsys fits every candidate profile class in both resting orientations during the measurement pass. On the results screen, tapping "Other way up" on any asymmetric profile card flips the section drawing and swaps in that orientation’s height-corrected ID, OD, height, and 3D model without re-uploading.
How does Olypsys handle metric vs. imperial hydraulic seals and worn or swollen parts?
A used seal pulled from a cylinder rarely measures at its exact catalogue dimension: polyurethane and rubber swell in oil, stretch during removal, or wear down in service. Rather than requiring an exact to-the-tenth-of-a-millimetre hit, Olypsys checks your measured ID, OD, and height against both metric (mm) and imperial (inch) standard tables simultaneously using realistic service-wear tolerances. It shows the closest standard matches in both systems side by side, and flags when a metric and inch size sit close enough together (for example, 40.0 mm vs 1-9/16" / 39.69 mm) that you should confirm the metal rod or bore with calipers.
What types of seals are included in the 30,184-part hydraulic seal catalogue?
The catalogue spans 24 generic profile classes and 30,184 published identities across both lipped and non-lipped cylinder parts: rod seals (symmetric, loaded, X-energised, twin-lip, fabric-backed, PTFE glide rings, vee packings), piston seals (5-part compact sets, PTFE glide rings, T-seals, piston cups, cast-iron rings), wipers (snap-in, AN, D/DT, double-lip, metal-cased), buffer seals, guide/wear bands, backup rings, cushion seals, and rotary shaft seals (TC oil seals and V-rings).
